Kenya has successfully secured Ghana’s support for Raila Odinga’s bid for the African Union chairmanship during President William Ruto’s State visit to the country.

In a statement on Wednesday after holding talks with President Nana Akufo-Addo, the head of state revealed Kenya will in turn support Ghana’s candidature for the Secretary General of the Commonwealth as a reciprocation for backing its AUC Chair candidate.

“Your Excellency, my Dear Brother, I thank you most sincerely for accepting to support Kenya’s candidature for the position of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (2025-2028),” Ruto said.

“On our part, I have assured His Excellency that Kenya will support the Republic of Ghana for the candidature of Hon Shirley Botchwey, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, for the position of Secretary General of the Commonwealth for the period 2024-2029,” he added during a joint conference with President Nana Akufo Addo at Jubilee House, Accra.

Kenya’s candidature stems from a comprehensive stakeholder engagement process across government, demonstrating a commitment to inclusivity and transparency in the selection process.

President Ruto has been one of the most vocal African leaders at the forefront of advancing the Pan-African Agenda, encompassing principles of independence, sovereignty, peace, security, development, prosperity, and sustainability.

Kenya’s aspiration for the AU Commission Chairmanship aligns with its dedication to contributing to the realization of Agenda 2063, reflecting a commitment to continental development and progress.
