REVEALED: Why Gachagua Is Retreating to Wamunyoro

DCP Party leader Rigathi Gachagua’s decision to increasingly center his political activities at Wamunyoro may be more strategic than symbolic.

Having been impeached and effectively removed from the presidential succession ladder, Gachagua appears to be repositioning himself as a kingmaker rather than a king.

For a politician whose path to the presidency has become uncertain, political endorsements may now represent his most valuable asset.

Wamunyoro has gradually evolved into a pilgrimage site for aspiring politicians seeking his blessing, whether they are contesting seats under the DCP banner or positioning themselves for larger national ambitions.

In Kenyan politics, endorsements are rarely free. Politicians often reward influential figures with gifts, goodwill, and political support in exchange for access to their networks and voter bases.

It is therefore not surprising that visitors to Wamunyoro frequently arrive bearing gifts ranging from goats and cows to other tokens of appreciation. Such gestures are part of Kenya’s long-standing political culture.

Gachagua himself has previously hinted that politics is an expensive investment.

Having spent years building political capital, mobilizing supporters, and financing political activities, he may now view his current position as an opportunity to recover some of those investments. Unable to run for the presidency under current circumstances, his influence becomes the commodity he can trade.

At the same time, there is no guarantee that candidates who receive his endorsement today will honor political commitments tomorrow. Kenyan politics is littered with examples of alliances that collapsed once elections were won. This reality may explain why Gachagua appears keen to maximize his leverage while he still commands significant attention towards the polls.

Whether Wamunyoro becomes the opposition’s power center or merely a temporary political stopover remains to be seen.

What is clear is that Gachagua is adapting to a new political reality, one in which influence, not office, may be his greatest source of power.
