The government is set to establish Kenya Coast Guard Service (KCGS) bases in Homa Bay town and Mfangano Island to bolster security measures in Lake Victoria.

Dr. Raymond Omollo, Principal Secretary for Interior and National Administration, on Friday announced that these two bases would complement the existing one in Mbita Town.

Establishing Coast Guard Service bases aims to address security issues in the lake region and fortify the blue economy.

Dr. Omollo acknowledged that fishermen in Lake Victoria have long been grappling with security challenges while fishing.

“The KCGS falls under my purview, and we are committed to establishing additional bases in Homa Bay and on the island,” Dr. Omollo said at Kakiimba, Mfangano Island in Homabay.

Fishermen in the area have frequently raised concerns about harassment by security personnel from neighboring countries, especially when crossing the boundaries of the three East African nations.

The PS expressed his concern for the challenges faced by fishermen during President William Ruto’s visit to Mfangano Island last month, where he was briefed on the security problems in the lake region.

During the visit, Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, speaking on behalf of residents, highlighted the threats and humiliation faced by fishermen from the security forces of neighboring countries.

Dr. Omollo assured the people of Nyanza that their security is a top priority and urged them to support the government’s efforts to ensure security for all.

“We have a capable County security team, and we are guaranteeing you maximum security, as directed by the President,” the PS emphasized.

He further disclosed that the Interior Ministry plans to construct Suba Central Sub-County headquarters in Sena. This new administrative unit was recently created to bring government services closer to residents living on the islands in the lake.

To ensure effective service delivery, Dr. Omollo emphasized that the ministry would ensure the necessary infrastructure is established for the benefit of the local population.
