In a rapid government response to the devastating floods affecting multiple counties in Kenya, the Ministry of Interior and National Administration has set up 115 camps across 19 counties to provide shelter for 27,586 displaced individuals. The distribution of 336,000 kilogrammes of food supplies, including rice and beans, is already underway to support affected communities.

According to the Ministry, the situation remains critical, with a need for additional resources in various affected areas. The Ministry’s statement highlights the urgency, stating, “There is a need for more food, medical kits, and non-food items in affected counties and where search and rescue operations are still ongoing.”

Furthermore, weather forecasts indicate potential recovery initiatives in some regions, but the threat of continued heavy rains and potential flooding in certain areas persists. The Ministry is urging residents living near water bodies to evacuate immediately for their safety, emphasizing the importance of adhering to evacuation orders provided by authorities.

With over 196,000 people impacted, 210 lives lost, and 1,967 schools damaged, the situation remains dire. The Ministry’s call to action urges Kenyans to stay vigilant, limit travel to essential trips only, and follow guidance from authorities to ensure their safety during this crisis.
