Parents Raise Concerns Over Unaccounted Charges at Loreto Matunda High School

Parents at Loreto Matunda High School have raised concerns over alleged additional charges imposed on them that are not reflected in the official school fee structure.

According to several parents, they were required to pay an extra KSh 20,000 beginning in Form One, which was reportedly meant to fund the construction of a dormitory. While the dormitory project has since been completed, parents claim they have continued to make the payments without any clear communication on the total amount collected or how the funds were utilized.

The concerns have been compounded by a recent incident at the close of Term Two, where students were reportedly sent home with fee statements indicating a balance of KSh 3,500. This is despite many parents having already cleared the required school fees. Upon inquiry, parents were allegedly informed that the amount was meant for “teachers’ motivation.” However, the charge is not indicated in the official fee structure and was not communicated in advance.

Parents now say they are uncertain about what they are being charged for, noting that both the KSh 20,000 dormitory levy and the KSh 3,500 “teachers’ motivation” fee are not part of the approved fee guidelines.

The main concern raised is the lack of transparency and accountability in the collection of these additional funds, as well as whether such charges are permissible outside the official school fee structure.

They are now calling on the school administration to provide a clear explanation, proper documentation, and accountability regarding the funds, to ensure parents fully understand the nature and purpose of the charges.
