NLC to Acquire Land in Muhuru Bay for Construction of Muhuru Pier

The National Land Commission (NLC) has announced plans to acquire 26 parcels of land totalling 6.8 hectares in Muhuru Bay, Migori County, to pave the way for the construction of Muhuru Pier. The project, inaugurated by President William Ruto in May, is being undertaken on behalf of the Migori County Government.

According to a gazette notice dated August 26, the commission has directed all affected landowners, whose names were published in the notice, to present themselves at the Migori County Lands Office for compensation hearings.

“In pursuance of the Land Act, 2012, Part VIII, the National Land Commission, on behalf of the County Government of Migori, gives notice of a hearing of claims to compensation for interested parties in the land required for the construction of Muhuru Pier,” the notice stated.

A pier is a raised platform extending into a water body, often used for docking ships, fishing activities, and supporting local trade. Once completed, Muhuru Pier is expected to boost fishing activities, enhance transportation, and open up new economic opportunities in the region.

The NLC has directed all affected persons to submit written claims for compensation, alongside copies of their national ID, KRA PIN, land ownership documents, and bank account details. These submissions can be made at Ardhi House in Nairobi or at the Migori County Lands Office.

The move comes just two weeks after the commission revealed similar plans to acquire land in Kiambu County for the construction of the Ndekere–Kwa Macharia–Cuniniki Road. The parcels targeted in Kiambu, measuring 0.217 hectares, were also gazetted earlier this month.
