Frustrated Customer Reveals How Safaricom Cons Kenyans Using 544# While Buying Airtime/Data, Vows Lawsuit After Losing Thousands
A growing wave of frustration has erupted online after a Kenyan customer, identified as Liankey, came forward alleging that Safaricom has been quietly exploiting unsuspecting subscribers through the *544# menu when purchasing airtime and data bundles.
Her claims have sparked outrage across social media, with many Kenyans stepping forward to report similar experiences.
According to Liankey, the problem began when she attempted to purchase airtime and a data bundle through the popular *544# USSD code.
Despite following all the required steps, she says the transaction failed, yet her money was deducted.
What was expected to be a routine purchase quickly turned into a nightmare that left her thousands of shillings short.
“I kept trying to buy a bundle and each time it failed, but the money disappeared. Safaricom has not given me any explanation to date,” she lamented in a viral post.
She accuses the telco giant of turning a blind eye to the errors affecting customers and profiting from failed or reversed transactions that are never communicated or refunded.
Her attempts to seek help through Safaricom’s customer care channels allegedly yielded no results.
She claims the responses were vague, slow, and dismissive, leaving her feeling ignored by a company she has relied on for years.
Frustrated and running out of patience, Liankey has now issued a 24-hour ultimatum to Safaricom, demanding a clear explanation and full refund.
She warned that failure to address the issue will push her to take legal action and launch a nationwide campaign urging Kenyans to boycott Safaricom services.
“I am ready to sue. I am also ready to lead a campaign to stop Kenyans from using Safaricom if this is not resolved. People are suffering,” she declared.
Her bold stand has resonated with many subscribers who shared screenshots and testimonies of mysteriously disappearing airtime, unexplained extra charges, and failed bundle purchases.
Some accused the company of “systematic daylight theft,” while others criticized what they termed an increasingly unreliable customer service experience.
The controversy has now attracted the attention of political leaders.
Liankey has publicly appealed to President William Samoei Ruto, ICT Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo, and other top officials to intervene and investigate the alleged exploitation of consumers by the country’s largest telecommunications provider.
She insists that millions of Kenyans depend on the service and deserve transparency, accountability, and fair treatment.
As public pressure mounts, Safaricom is yet to issue a formal statement addressing the allegations. Many now wait to see whether the company will respond within the ultimatum period or risk a legal showdown and a possible consumer revolt led by dissatisfied customers
