Kitui Speaker Suspends 11 MCAs Behind His Impeachment Motion

Kitui County Assembly Speaker Kevin Katisya has suspended 11 Members of the County Assembly (MCAs), including Matinyani MCA Sylvester Munyalo, for 90 days. The suspended group is behind a motion seeking his impeachment.
Munyalo, who filed the notice of motion, accused Katisya of abuse of office, gross violation of the Constitution, and conflict of interest. Reports indicate that 31 MCAs had already appended their signatures in support of the motion.
In his ruling, Speaker Katisya cited gross misconduct, arguing that the actions of the MCAs disrupted proceedings and undermined the dignity of the House. The suspension effectively stalls the impeachment bid, given that such motions are bound by strict timelines.
However, Munyalo dismissed the suspension, insisting it would not derail his push for impeachment. “The Speaker has no power to suspend MCAs unless they have defended themselves before the privileges committee. His decision is of no consequence. Expect all of us in the Assembly when sittings resume next Tuesday,” he declared.
The development comes barely a month after a similar incident in Kericho, where four MCAs were suspended for 90 days. The ward reps were captured on CCTV stoning Governor Eric Mutai’s office during his impeachment process, causing damage to both the governor’s office and the County Assembly building.
