A Bodyguard attached to Busia County Chief Officer for Finance Ahmed Hefow is reportedly receiving treatment at a hospital in Kisumu after allegedly shooting himself in the thigh while taking part in an operation to drive away members of a community linked to a certain origin in Busia.
The incident is said to have occurred on Saturday night, hours after Busia Governor Paul Otuoma allegedly warned that he would unleash “goons” to drive out members of the minority community from parts of the county.
The operation was reportedly headed to Marachi Estate in Burumba ward when the bodyguard allegedly sustained the gunshot wound.
Following the incident, social media attacks linked Edwin Wepukhulu, alias Chikuzee, to the shooting, an allegation that was dismissed as propaganda aimed at diverting attention from the incident since Chikuzee wasn’t in town by the time of shooting.
The youthful leader, widely known for his outspoken criticism of Governor Paul Otuoma and his frequent clashes with the Busia County administration, has since been arrested.
When contacted for comment, Western Regional Investigations Officer Douglas Shikana confirmed the arrest but declined to disclose the reasons behind it.
The arrest has sparked mixed reactions, with many of Chikuzee’s supporters describing it as politically motivated.
It comes a day after his multi-million-shilling mansion was reportedly destroyed by a group of goons allegedly linked to the Governor. .
