Royal Media Services (RMS) has responded to claims by Citizen TV news anchor Trevor Ombija that former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua attempted to have him dismissed from his job following a heated television interview.
RMS Editorial Director and Head of Strategy Linus Kaikai dismissed the allegation, saying there was no such communication from Gachagua to the media house.
Kaikai made the clarification while responding to a report by K24 TV about Ombija’s remarks.
“Dear @K24Tv, this is not true. There was no such call from former DP Gachagua. Such a call would in any case not be worthwhile at RMS,” Kaikai stated.
He further revealed that he had spoken directly with Ombija over the comments.
According to Kaikai, Ombija acknowledged that the remarks were a mistake and expressed regret over them.
“I have asked Trevor about the remarks and he says it is ‘a mistake and I regret it’,” Kaikai said.
Kaikai added that Ombija told him he had not expected the comments to attract widespread attention.
“Trevor has also told me he ‘didn’t think the remarks would be picked up,’” he added.
The clarification came after Ombija reportedly told supporters during a political gathering in Nyakach that Gachagua had made calls seeking to have him removed from his position at Citizen TV.
Ombija linked the alleged attempt to a tense on-air encounter between the two during an interview earlier in 2026.
During that interview, Gachagua openly accused the journalist of bias and questioned the manner in which the discussion had been conducted.
Months later, while addressing residents in Nyakach, Ombija revisited the encounter and claimed that the disagreement went beyond the television studio.
He alleged that Gachagua later contacted people within RMS in an attempt to have him fired.
However, Kaikai’s response now directly challenges that version of events, with the senior RMS executive maintaining that no such call was made.
The development has added a new twist to the public disagreement, particularly after Kaikai said Ombija himself had admitted that the remarks were a mistake.
Ombija has in recent months increasingly appeared at political events as he positions himself ahead of the 2027 General Election.
