In 2014, Nasra Fundikira’s journey through medical school hit an abrupt halt.

Discontinued in her first year at the University of Nairobi’s medical school, she found herself plunged into a deep well of despair.

Struggling with severe depression and lacking the necessary tools to navigate through it, Nasra felt utterly lost.

Reflecting on that challenging period, Nasra recently took to Twitter to share her story. She revealed how the dismissal had not only shattered her dreams but also inflicted a profound sense of shame and mental anguish.

At that point, the dream of becoming a doctor seemed like an unattainable fantasy.

However, Nasra’s resilience and determination refused to be extinguished. Four years later, she made the courageous decision to return to medical school, determined to rewrite her narrative.

Now, a decade after her initial steps into the world of medicine, Nasra stands on the brink of graduation.

Reflecting on her journey, Nasra acknowledges the profound transformation she has undergone.

”I used to tell myself “it’s just a piece of paper. It doesn’t matter,” to console myself. It’s more than that; I’ve gained life skills through the adversities I overcame in medical school that have sharpened my character; my mind expanded; my spirituality deepened.” Nasra Wrote

Today, as Nasra prepares to embark on the next chapter of her life, she finds herself abundantly blessed. The very things she used to pray for – purpose, vision, mental well-being, physical health, and a supportive community – now grace her life abundantly.

Amidst life’s challenges and uncertainties, Nasra has found a reason to hold on – her unwavering sense of purpose guiding her through even the darkest of moments.
