In the aftermath of the uproar surrounding her recent comedic content about Joseph Irungu, better known as Jowie, renowned comedian Eunice Mammito has stepped forward to address the controversy.

Mammito’s latest video, a parody rendition of Dolly Parton’s ‘Jolene’ with modified lyrics referencing Jowie, received significant backlash for its perceived insensitivity towards the seriousness of Jowie Irungu’s death sentence in the murder case of businesswoman Monica Kimani.

Critics condemned the skit, accusing Mammito of trivializing a tragic situation and showing disrespect towards the memory of the deceased victim.  Some Kenyans even went ahead and unfollowed and blocked her on her Instagram page.

In her statement, Mammito acknowledged the unexpected outcome of her controversial skit, noting, “I have witnessed a very rare occurrence, something that has not happened since 2002 – people from every background uniting together for a reason, to cook me.”

Expressing her feelings about the backlash, Mammito shared a blend of personal vulnerability and a call to action, stating, “I’m in hot fire now, my soul wipes. I am but a small thin woman with no buttocks and am not as attractive, how dare I joke about a beautiful accused person, but your unity how it fills my soul!”

Mammito’s urged her audience to channel their capacity for unity towards constructive social change.
