Police in Emali, Makueni County, have made a startling arrest as an officer was apprehended for allegedly participating in the ongoing anti-government demonstrations.

The constable was taken into custody by his fellow officers after he was discovered engaging with a group of young men who were obstructing the busy Nairobi-Mombasa highway and pelting stones at motorists in Emali Town on a Thursday.

The incident was promptly reported to the Emali police station under OB 15/20/7/2023, marking the arrest of a police officer involved in the demonstrations.

However, it was not just the officer’s involvement in the protests that raised eyebrows; he was also found to be in possession of 40 rolls of bhang (cannabis sativa) with an estimated street value of Sh2,000 at the time of his arrest.

According to a police report seen by The Star and dated July 20, 2023, the officer in question was identified as PC Evans Otieno, whose recommendation letter had been issued on June 19, 2023.

The report detailed the officer’s alleged actions, stating, “The said officer was also seen by his colleagues yesterday 19/07/2023 being among the rioters who were pelting stones at Emali police station and police officers.”

As a result of these serious allegations, PC Evans Otieno was promptly placed under lawful police custody.

The authorities have launched a thorough investigation into the incident to determine the full extent of the officer’s involvement and to ascertain any other individuals who may be linked to the demonstrations.
