Shock as Two Thugs Shot Dead Moments After Scandalous Equity Bank Staff Allegedly Leak Customer Information to Criminal Gangs

The shocking incident on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, saw two suspected gangsters shot dead by plainclothes officers along the busy Moi Avenue in Nairobi.

Six of their alleged accomplices reportedly vanished with KSh 300,000 stolen from one of Kenya’s most controversial banks, Equity Bank.

According to eyewitnesses, chaos erupted moments after an official from the Embassava Matatu Sacco withdrew cash from the bank. Unbeknownst to him, he was being trailed by eight armed suspects.

The gang confronted him and allegedly snatched an envelope containing the KSh 300,000, prompting the victim to scream for help as bystanders rushed to his rescue.

Unknown to the suspects, plainclothes officers from the Nairobi Central Police Station had been monitoring the area and had already noticed the group trailing the victim. When the suspects attempted to flee, they allegedly brandished knives at the officers, prompting the police to open fire.

Two suspects were fatally shot as the situation escalated, while the remaining six escaped with the stolen cash.

Police later recovered three knives, several mobile phones, and assorted keys believed to belong to victims of previous robberies.

“They target people who have made withdrawals from banks and usually wield knives at their prey,” said Central Police Commander Philemon Nyakumbo.

This incident adds to growing concerns from customers who have reported being robbed shortly after withdrawing large sums from Equity Bank, with many citing fears of possible internal collusion. The attack also comes just days after another Embassava Matatu Sacco official was robbed of KSh 500,000 immediately after leaving the same bank.
