Shock as Kenyans Pay Thousands for Lipa Mdogo Mdogo Phones from Controversial Onfon Mobile Services, Only for the Company to Lock Their Phones Even After Payment
Hundreds of small-scale traders in Nairobi were left stranded on Saturday after their Lipa Mdogo Mdogo phones suddenly stopped working, even though they had been making regular daily payments to Onfon Mobile.
The disruption sparked outrage as traders accused the company of unfair practices, claiming their devices were locked despite timely payments.
The incident caused chaos at Onfon Mobile’s offices in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD), where disgruntled traders staged protests demanding explanations.
Many reported that their phones remained inaccessible for hours, even after multiple attempts to pay via the company’s mobile application.
Some traders said that although Onfon staff temporarily unlocked their devices at the offices, the phones automatically locked again within minutes.
“I pay for the phone, yet it’s switched off by 8:49 pm,” said trader Mbugua, reflecting the frustration felt by many.
Another, Odhiambo, added, “I tried to pay almost five times, but it didn’t reflect in my balance. I don’t know how to pay anymore.”
Reports indicate that traders pay between KSh 90 and KSh 120 daily for the service. Some had even made several payments on Friday evening, yet their phones remained locked, preventing them from contacting customers and conducting business.
“I paid KSh 36,000 in one year, and I didn’t get my phone back,” a frustrated trader said, highlighting the heavy financial loss experienced by many.
Central Police Station Commander Philip Nyakombo confirmed that investigations into the matter are ongoing following dozens of complaints from affected traders.
Lipa Mdogo Mdogo phones are equipped with software that automatically locks devices if payments are delayed.
This system prevents users from making or receiving calls and accessing other phone services until payments are verified, a policy meant to enforce compliance but which has now sparked accusations of misuse.
For Nairobi traders, the incident has caused significant disruption, with many reporting lost sales and frustrated customers.
As investigations continue, users are calling for authorities to determine whether Onfon Mobile is a legitimate company or a scam.
