Drama in Migori: US-Based Naomi Ogutu Allegedly Attacked by Ex-Husband at Brother-in-Law’s Burial
Drama erupted in Migori during the burial of the brother-in-law of US-based businesswoman Naomi Ogutu after she was allegedly attacked by her ex-husband upon arriving at the funeral.
Eyewitnesses said tensions flared moments after Naomi Ogutu arrived at the burial, with a confrontation breaking out in full view of shocked mourners.
The incident reportedly occurred near her homestead in Kadem, Kanyarwanda area of Nyatike Constituency, where family members and villagers had gathered to mourn the deceased.
In a detailed statement shared on her Facebook page, Ogutu claimed that her ex-husband confronted and physically assaulted her as she attempted to enter the compound.
She alleged that the confrontation quickly escalated, drawing the attention of mourners and residents nearby, turning a solemn occasion into a tense and emotional scene.
According to Ogutu, her ex-husband became aggressive and loudly caused a commotion, allegedly calling out to young men in the area and urging them to attack her.
However, she stated that none of them complied, with one young man reportedly telling her that he could not harm her out of respect, describing her as a mother figure.
"I kid you not, Dude… he said “beat this woman! Where are the boys?” Then everyone was quiet no one dared move to come beat me. I went close to where the young men were and told one beat me si you have been instructed to beat me! He said “mama Laura I can’t beat you.. you’re like my mother!” She recalled.
Ogutu said this response left her shaken but grateful amid the hostility.
She further claimed that the confrontation took place just a short distance from where the deceased lay in a coffin, a situation she described as deeply painful and disrespectful to the departed.
In her post, Ogutu said she had travelled from abroad solely to mourn her brother-in-law and attend his burial, not to engage in conflict.
Out of respect for the deceased, Ogutu stated that she chose to leave the area peacefully despite the alleged assault.
In an emotional tribute addressed to her late brother-in-law, she expressed sorrow that the burial was overshadowed by the confrontation, adding that she felt forced to leave even as the funeral proceeded.
Ogutu went on to declare that the incident marked the end of her ties with Kanyarwanda village.
She stated that she would no longer return to the area for any reason, including future burials, and claimed she had severed all remaining connections there.
She also alleged that false rumours were being spread about her intentions during the incident and warned that she would pursue legal action if the claims continued.
Reached for comment, Naomi said that the incident caught her by surprise because she didn't expect her ex to behave like he did.
According to her, the ex-husband once accused her of planning to end his life while in the US yet he still visited her house with his current wife and she cooked for them.
"If I had such plans, why did he trust me to come over with my replacement to my house during Thanksgiving?" she questioned.
