A journalist has alleged that he received death threats after publishing a story about a South Sudanese national facing criminal charges over an alleged KSh 2.1 million fraud case currently before a Nairobi court.
The journalist, who requested anonymity due to security concerns, claims the threats began after he declined requests to remove the published story from his platform.
He further alleges that the individual sought to have similar reports taken down from other media outlets and blogs.
Court records indicate that John Tong Boul Majuach has been charged in connection with an alleged KSh 2.1 million fraud involving the proposed registration of a company branch in South Sudan.
Prosecutors allege that he obtained money from a Kenyan businessman by falsely claiming he could facilitate the registration.
The case, which was mentioned before Principal Magistrate Daisy Mutai, brought to light the growing number of cross-border business fraud investigations involving promises of investment opportunities, company registrations, and government-linked facilitation services in East Africa, with law enforcement agencies warning Kenyan entrepreneurs to exercise caution when engaging intermediaries claiming special access to government offices in neighbouring countries.
Now, Majuach has reportedly embarked on a campaign to have every trace of the embarrassing exposé erased from the digital space, approaching various blogs and media houses that published the story and successfully convincing many of them to pull down the posts through a combination of financial incentives, political pressure, and threats, but he has now encountered resistance from a blogger who refuses to comply.
What has made this situation particularly alarming is the web of connections that Majuach has cultivated in Kenya, particularly within the DCI Headquarters along Kiambu Road, Nairobi, connections that he has allegedly used to intimidate those who cross his path and to operate with a level of impunity that most foreigners could only dream of, with sources close to the matter confirming that he has cultivated deep ties with senior officials within the DCI.
“He has friends in very high places,” the blogger stated.
“He is not just an ordinary South Sudanese national living in Kenya. He has deep pockets and very deep links.”
The blogger further revealed that Majuach has been living in Kenya for years, is married to a Kenyan woman, and has embedded himself so deeply into the local system that he now operates with the confidence of a man who believes he is untouchable.
This confidence has manifested in his arrogance and his refusal to accept that some stories cannot be erased.
The South Sudanese national has been on a campaign to clean his online presence, a move that many have interpreted as an attempt to protect his reputation and his business interests in Kenya, but the blogger believes it is more sinister than that.
According to the journalist, he has refused to remove the story, maintaining that it was based on court proceedings and information contained in publicly available records.
