Meet Alex Okosi, The New Managing Director for Google in Africa

Google, on Tuesday, September 5th, made a significant announcement, appointing Alex Okosi as the Managing Director for Google in Africa. Alex Okosi, who currently serves as the Managing Director for YouTube in EMEA (Europe, Middle East, and Africa) Emerging Markets, will now take the helm at Google, overseeing the tech giant’s operations across the African continent.

In his new role, Alex Okosi will be responsible for driving Google’s initiatives and operations in Africa. This encompasses a wide range of efforts, including programs aimed at fostering business growth and economic development throughout the continent. Additionally, Okosi will focus on expanding internet access and providing tools to empower the next billion users to make the most of the web.

Meir Brand, Vice President of EMEA Emerging Markets at Google, expressed confidence in Okosi’s appointment, stating, “Alex is a proven leader with a wealth of experience in the media and technology industries. He has a deep understanding of African countries and a passion for using technology to empower people and businesses.”

In 2003, Okosi transferred to the international Strategy and Business Development team in London where he developed the business plan and launched MTV’s first localised channel in Africa, MTV Base, in 2005. Okosi would go on to spearhead the growth and development of the ViacomCBS business in Africa by launching additional channel brands tailored for the African market including MTV, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon, NickToons and BET.

Alex Okosi brings with him a wealth of experience in the media, entertainment, and technology sectors. Prior to his role at YouTube, he held the position of Executive Vice President and Managing Director of Viacom International Media Networks Africa and BET International. His contributions at YouTube have been instrumental in steering the platform’s growth and expansion across Africa, the Middle East, and Turkey.

He also led the International division of BET for ViacomCBS across Europe, Asia and Africa. With media and entertainment experience amassed across 3 continents over a 21-year span, Okosi has a broad background in Business Development, Corporate Strategy, Advertising Sales, Distribution, Digital Media and General Management.

Expressing his enthusiasm for his new role, Okosi stated, “I am excited at the prospect of leading Google’s team in Africa and the opportunity to be an even closer part of this diverse and dynamic region, which is so close to my heart. I’m a firm believer in the potential for technology and, in particular, the internet to improve people’s lives and to help individuals and businesses in Africa to thrive.”

Google’s presence in Africa spans over a decade, with offices in Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa. The company’s products and services are used by millions of people across the continent daily.
