Implosion in the United Opposition as Two Factions Clash over 2027 Ticket

Infighting, suspicion, and lack of trust within the United Opposition have escalated international tension within the political formation, and sources are now revealing that two rival camps have emerged, potentially splitting the outfit right in the middle.

The first camp comprises Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, impeached deputy president Rigathi Gachagua, DAP-Kenya’s Eugene Wamalwa and George Natembeya, and DP leader Justin Muturi.

Jubilee Party's flagbearer Fred Matiang’i, Dr. Mukhisa Kituyi, and People's Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua are in the rival camp.

Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka and  PLP boss Martha Karua were appointed by the United Opposition as co-convenors and Dr Mukhisa Khituyi as head of secretariat and spokesperson two months ago; however, according to insiders,  the duo has never held a meeting on the way forward.

On Monday, Kalonzo Musyoka's camp met at the SKM Command Centre in Karen to discuss the upcoming by-elections and affirmed their unity in approaching the mini polls.

Martha Karua was in Bondo to pay her homage to the home of late ODM leader Raila Odinga, while  Matiang’i and Khituyi, who were in Nairobi, were not invited to the Karen meeting.

Last Friday, Kalonzo hosted Gachagua, Muturi, and Linturi in his Karen home.  Earlier last week,  Martha Karua, as co-convenor, called for a meeting, but it failed to take off after Gachagua and Kalonzo failed to show up, with sources saying the duo did not want to be in a forum with Matiang'i and Mukhisa.

However, yesterday, Karua, Dr. Matiang’i, and Dr. Kituyi held a separate meeting to review their position within the United Opposition.

Gachagua, with his DCP party, is uncomfortable with Matiang’i’s move to Uhuru Kenyatta's Jubilee, which also has a foothold in the Mt Kenya region.
