Kenyan singer Millicent Jepkorir, popularly known as Marakwet Daughter, has raised concerns over the exploitation of her viral song “Mali Safi Chito” by local DJs.
In a recent interview with TUKO.co.ke, she expressed her frustration at DJs who have been uploading her song to their YouTube channels without her consent, describing it as unacceptable.
Marakwet Daughter emphasized the effort and dedication she put into creating “Mali Safi Chito” and voiced her disappointment at seeing DJs profit from her hard work without proper authorization.
She stressed that while she has no issue with DJs playing her song at clubs or events, she adamantly opposes its unauthorized distribution on YouTube.
Pointing directly at the camera, Marakwet Daughter issued a stern warning to DJs, urging them to respect her rights as the creator of the song.
“DJs heshimu kazi yangu, you are not allowed kuupload my music in your YouTube channel. Unajua chenye nilipitia ndo nikarecord hiyo wimbo? I have the rights, I own the rights it is registered. Do not upload my work on your YouTube channel. Piga sherehe, tumia song, furahia…pata ya event but not YouTube,” she said.
While Marakwet Daughter did not disclose the identity of the DJ who violated her rights, her statement has ignited discussions among netizens.
