A 13-year-old girl from the Butere region has surprised many by walking a distance of over 15 kilometers to Mumias, aspiring to join St. Mary’s Girls High School.

Diana Nyarotso, dressed in the navy blue uniform she used at Ebulafu Primary School, carried an envelope containing her admission letter to St. Mary’s High School and a copy of her KCPE exam results.

The black shoes she wore were covered in dust and had turned a shade of brown, evidence of the journey she had undertaken to reach her intended destination.

“I studied at Ebulafu Primary School, where I scored 375 marks in my KCPE exam and got an invitation to join St. Mary’s High School,” she explained.

“However, my father passed away in 2012, and my mother is unwell, unable to afford my school fees. That’s why I woke up early in the morning and started walking to plead with the principal of St. Mary’s to allow me to join Form One. I am committed to studying and becoming a lawyer to help the less fortunate in society.”

The Principal of St. Mary’s High School, Monicah Buchichi, expressed astonishment when the girl approached her with nothing but a desire to join the school.

“When I further questioned her, I discovered that she comes from a poor family, and her situation touched me. I had no choice but to allow her to join and seek resources to enable her to get all she needs for school,” said Mrs. Buchichi.
