Brittney Caldwell, a 30-year-old native of Virginia, embarked on a life-changing journey to Africa that would alter the course of her existence and the lives of countless others.
What began as a Christmas trip soon transformed into a deep-rooted commitment to make a difference in the education sector of the African continent, leading her to Kenya, where she found her purpose.
Caldwell’s initial intention was not just to enjoy a vacation in Africa but to contribute meaningfully. During her time in the continent, she immersed herself in charitable work, primarily in Ghana, where she witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by schools.
The lack of basic resources vital for students’ education in Ghanaian schools deeply moved her. Most schools lacked fundamental amenities, and children, despite their intelligence, had to cope with subpar conditions.
Motivated by the determination to make a difference, Caldwell took it upon herself to raise funds. Her goal was to establish a computer laboratory in a local school, providing students with access to essential technology and resources crucial for their academic development. She was inspired by the resilience of these children, who managed to stay engaged despite the adversity they faced.
Her philanthropic efforts, initially rooted in Ghana, eventually extended to Kenya. Caldwell’s dedication to providing quality education led her to secure a teaching position at the International School of Kenya (ISK).
Although her original plan was to teach in Ghana, the doors that opened for her in Kenya felt like destiny. Despite the geographic shift, her mission remained unchanged: to impact lives positively through education.
One significant aspect that drew Caldwell to Kenya was its proximity to Ghana, allowing her to continue her charitable work in both countries effectively. The ease of travel between these nations enabled her to maintain her connections and actively contribute to the communities she had grown to love.
To fully commit to her mission, Caldwell made a bold decision – she sold her house in the United States. By divesting herself of her material comforts, she channelled her resources entirely towards her mission of building a brighter future for African children. This sacrifice highlighted her unwavering dedication to the cause.
In Kenya, Caldwell found a sense of belonging and purpose. Working at ISK, she not only imparts knowledge but also imbibes herself in the diverse cultures of the African continent. Her experiences enrich her understanding of the local traditions, enhancing her ability to connect with her students on a deeper level.
