Party of National Unity (PNU) leader Peter Gatirau Munya has declared that his party is firmly within the Ukombozi Alliance.
Munya says the alliance, led by Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, has former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i and Siaya Governor James Orengo serving as co-chairpersons. He further maintains that constituent parties have unanimously agreed to field a single presidential candidate to challenge President William Ruto in 2027, with Kalonzo positioned as the alliance’s automatic flagbearer.
The declaration, however, brings into focus an emerging political divide over who belongs to the Ukombozi Alliance and under what terms, particularly given the reservations previously expressed by both Linda Mwananchi and the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) about joining the coalition in its current formation.
Linda Mwananchi has consistently maintained that it has an independent political agenda, with allies of Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna insisting that the movement is building around his presidential ambitions. The disagreement has previously spilled into a legal confrontation over the Ukombozi name between Sifuna’s camp and Kalonzo’s faction.
Sifuna’s allies have also drawn a clear line against any arrangement that would relegate him to a running-mate position under Kalonzo, maintaining that their candidate should be considered for the top seat. They have framed their political proposition around generational change and the entry of fresh leadership into the country’s national political conversation.
At the heart of the emerging disagreement is whether Ukombozi Alliance is intended to accommodate different opposition formations under a negotiated presidential arrangement or whether it is already a settled coalition with Kalonzo as its undisputed presidential candidate. While Munya’s declaration presents the latter position, Linda Mwananchi continues to advance Sifuna’s presidential ambitions independently, leaving the question of a common opposition ticket unresolved.
