Gem parliamentary aspirant Eng. Samuel Opot has visited Siriwo in Central Gem, Siaya County, to stand with a family devastated by a deadly house fire reportedly triggered by a gas-cylinder explosion earlier this week.
The tragedy occurred at Mahoma Village in Siriwo Sub-location on Monday evening, September 21, 2026, when a fire swept through a family home and killed three children.
Siriwo Assistant Chief Dedan Ogol said the children were inside the house when the gas cylinder exploded, with the flames spreading rapidly through the building before neighbours could rescue them. Authorities have since launched investigations into the exact circumstances surrounding the fire.
Following the tragedy, Opot travelled to the affected area to offer humanitarian support and express solidarity with the bereaved family as the community continues to mourn the loss.
The incident has left the family facing not only the pain of losing three children but also significant material losses after the house and property inside were destroyed by the fire. Local residents reportedly attempted to put out the flames, but the fire had already engulfed the structure.
Opot, who hails from Sirembe in North Gem Ward, is seeking the Gem parliamentary seat in the 2027 General Election. He is an engineer by profession.
His visit to Siriwo comes as residents rally around the affected family following one of the most painful incidents reported in the constituency in recent days.
