Jubilee presidential candidate Fred Matiang’i and People’s Party of Kenya (PPK) leader Ndindi Nyoro will hold separate political events at the same venue in Kangema on Saturday, an unusual coincidence that has not gone unnoticed.
Both events are at the Kangema Empowerment Centre, with Nyoro listed for an SDA church service in the morning and Matiang’i expected at a Jubilee gathering in the same Kangema constituency.
The coincidence comes days after Nyoro publicly pushed back against former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who has rejected PPK and accused the Kiharu MP of working with President William Ruto as a mole within the opposition.
The two, Matiang’i and Nyoro, are presidential contenders from different parties, yet their politics have so far left room for coexistence.
Matiang’i was among opposition leaders who congratulated Nyoro when he unveiled PPK as his presidential vehicle, despite knowing that the move would put another presidential name into an already crowded opposition field.
Nyoro, a Murang’a politician seeking the presidency under his own party, has not demanded that the county line up behind PPK or declared other parties unwelcome in his backyard. Fred Matiang’s Jubilee remains free to organise in Murang’a, just as PPK is building its own presence.
Gachagua’s DCP, by contrast, has increasingly been presented as the political vehicle through which the former DP seeks to consolidate Mt Kenya ahead of 2027.
Nyoro’s confrontation with Gachagua has brought that question into sharper focus.
The Kiharu MP earlier this week reminded Rigathi Gachagua that he supported him through some of his most difficult political moments, including the impeachment process, when he did not vote for his removal but the DCP boss continues to politically attack him in Mt Kenya.
Rigathi Gachagua is seeking to turn his personal influence in Mt Kenya into an organised political machine where the DCP party is the dominant political force in the region.
