From the Tanzanian island of Kome in the Sengerema district, a woman is reported to have ambushed another woman and scalded her with boiling water all over her body.

According to the Mwananchi newspaper in the country, Vumilia Kasomelo, who is the first wife, admitted to committing the act against her co-wife, citing jealousy as the reason.

The incident was reported to have occurred during the night while people were keeping vigil at the funeral of their father-in-law.

She said the decision was driven by jealousy after her co-wife attended the funeral of their father-in-law, who, however, had not been officially introduced to her by her husband but was only hearing rumors from people.

“I became angry when people were pointing out that she was my co-wife, so I decided to pour boiling water on her.”

“I had never met her nor been officially introduced to her by my husband as his other wife; I only heard rumors from people. Even when she came to the funeral, people pointed out that she was my co-wife,” added the mother of six.

The younger wife, identified as Mariamu Paul, said she had left her home in the village of Bukokwa to attend the funeral of her father-in-law in the village of Lugata. After the burial at around two in the morning, she went to sleep, and that’s when her co-wife attacked her, pouring boiling water on her and fleeing.

“I don’t know what her problem was that she poured boiling water on me. I am in my place and she is in hers. We met at the funeral to bury our father-in-law, and she burned me with boiling water,” said Mariamu, who has three children with the same man.
