The Kenya African National  Union (Kanu) candidate for the Butula parliamentary seat George Sirima Okaro has said that his priorities will be in the areas of education and security with an emphasis on technical skills to address the issue of unemployment as well as curb insecurity.

Okaro said that if education is catered for in the model he advocates in Butula, it would solve several other issues noting that dealing with an educated society is easier to solve their problems.

“If our children who don’t go to college or those who drop out of school enrol for technical education, they will be equipped with skills to allow them secure employment and this will solve the escalation rate of un-employment in our society. When you solve unemployment, you solve insecurity,” Okaro said in a phone interview.

The aspiring MP who is set to succeed incumbent MP Joseph Oyula, said that education will therefore be his priority when he is elected noting that he will ensure the population is educated and equipped with skills.

“I will prioritise education and bursaries from the National Government Constituency Development Fund (NGCDF) will be fairly distributed,” he said.

“I will concentrate on the youth with a special focus on them getting skills because a lot of them have been to school but there is a difference between having an education and having skills,” Okaro noted.

He decried the importation of skilled labour into Butula Constituency when youths in the area remain jobless due to luck of skills.

“We need plumbers, carpenters, masons, electricians and other skilled workers but we import them since our youth here have no skills. I will prioritise area of technical education to see that our youth can find employment, they can employ themselves and even create employment,” he said.

“What makes me confident of being the next Butula MP is the fact that I am with the people. They have called on me to represent them. I have remained steadfast and the people of Butula region have seen my commitment,” he added.

Okaro is vying for the Butula parliamentary set on a Kanu ticket under the Azimio la Umoja coalition.
