Uhuru, Ruto Handshake Coming; Senior Political Analyst Warns Gachagua Amid Impeachment Tensions

Political analyst Mutahi Ngunyi has sparked fresh debate by predicting a possible reunion between President William Ruto and his predecessor, Uhuru Kenyatta, through a political handshake

. Ngunyi’s analysis suggests that this potential alliance could lead to significant political shifts in Kenya, including potential implications for Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

The relationship between Uhuru and Ruto soured when Uhuru backed Raila Odinga of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) during the 2022 general elections, distancing himself from his deputy.

However, Ngunyi, known for his “Tyranny of Numbers” theory before the 2013 elections, now anticipates a reconciliation between the two leaders.

Ruto has shown signs of his willingness to collaborate with his political rivals by nominating ODM stalwarts like Wycliffe Oparanya, John Mbadi, Hassan Joho, and Opiyo Wandayi to his proposed new cabinet.

Ngunyi warns that this political rapprochement might endanger Gachagua’s position, potentially setting him on a path toward impeachment.

“Dear Riggy G, do you understand what ODM joining the government means? And the upcoming Uhuru-Ruto handshake? It means impeachment. Not if, but when,” Ngunyi tweeted on July 29, 2024.

Since his election, Gachagua has established himself as the political leader of the Mount Kenya region. However, Ngunyi argues that Gachagua has not gained full acceptance from the community.

“GEMA does not like you. If in two years GEMA has not accepted Riggy G, something is wrong with this son of the soil,” Ngunyi asserted.

Ngunyi advises Gachagua to remain cautious, suggesting he enjoy his role as Deputy President for the next decade. He emphasizes that Gachagua should remain vigilant, as “only the paranoid survive.”

Gachagua has championed the interests of the Mount Kenya region, with Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga as his ardent supporter. Ngunyi advises Gachagua to silence Kahiga, warning, “When not speaking, he speaks for you. You are not the only sons of Mau Mau. Your methods are those of a novice.”
