A Nairobi man accused of exposing alleged fraudulent practices within Prophet David Owuor’s Repentance and Holiness Church has been released on a Sh2 million bond.
Bishop Faustine Ojango, a former senior member of the church turned whistleblower, faced cyber harassment charges under the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act, 2018.
Ojango was arrested on January 3, 2025, following accusations of posting defamatory content on social media targeting Archbishop Michael Nieswand, a high-ranking official in Owuor’s ministry.
Court documents allege the posts, published between December 27 and December 30, 2024, were intended to harass and defame the church leader.
Bishop Ojango had recently made headlines after an interview in which he accused the church of staging miracles and manipulating members into surrendering their life savings.
He described a “cult-like environment” where questioning the church’s practices led to ostracism or targeting.
According to Ojango, many of the supposed miracles showcased during crusades were fabricated to reinforce Prophet Owuor’s reputation as a divine leader.
He further claimed the church coerced followers into financial sacrifices, including selling property and taking loans, under the guise of “honoring the Prophet.”
The arrest has sparked public outrage, with critics alleging it is an attempt to silence Ojango and shield the church’s operations from scrutiny.
Supporters have decried the legal proceedings as unfair, citing the high bond amount of Sh2 million or cash bail of Sh700,000 as evidence of undue influence by the ministry.
“This is a blatant effort to suppress the truth,” said a source close to Ojango, who requested anonymity. “The charges are baseless and aim to intimidate anyone speaking out against Prophet Owuor and his ministry.”
Ojango’s revelations have intensified scrutiny of Prophet Owuor’s ministry, with former members coming forward to corroborate his claims.
One supporter stated, “I was part of the church for over five years and can confirm the bishop’s allegations. Anyone who dares to leave or question the ministry becomes a target.”
