A man from the Luo community, Vincent Otieno Okwanyo, has been charged with cyber harassment after sending an offensive message to Migori Woman Representative, Fatuma Zainabu Mohammed.
The message, which referenced her age and suggested she should marry before becoming older, sparked legal action and landed Otieno in court.
Otieno appeared before Milimani Magistrate BenMark Ekhubi, where he pleaded not guilty to the charges. According to the prosecution, he sent an insulting SMS to the legislator that read, “You are growing old, you should get a man to marry you.”
Prosecutors argue that the message was intended to demean and tarnish the reputation of the MP, who has served as a prominent political figure in Migori County.
Following his plea, Otieno was granted bail, with the magistrate setting bond at Sh100,000 or an alternative cash bail of Sh50,000.
The case is set for a full hearing, with more developments expected in the coming weeks.
