In a recent interview with Agikuyu vernacular media stations, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua made alarming allegations regarding an assassination attempt on a former National Intelligence Officer he had employed.
The officer, who was dismissed from the National Intelligence Service (NIS) before being hired by Gachagua, was reportedly shot and injured on his way to work at Gachagua’s Karen residence.
According to the Deputy President, the officer was followed by a motorcycle and shot in the shoulder. Fortunately, the officer received prompt medical attention, and the bullet was removed.
Gachagua expressed deep concern that the person behind this attempted assassination has not been apprehended, and the case remains uninvestigated.
Further intensifying the situation, Gachagua claimed that his phones have been tapped as part of a broader scheme to undermine his political influence.
He stated that conversations with those he contacts are recorded and scrutinized, aiming to intimidate him and his allies. “They are trying to sell fear to someone who cannot even be intimidated,” Gachagua asserted, emphasizing his resilience against such tactics.
The Deputy President also highlighted the misuse of government entities to instill fear among leaders, preventing them from speaking the truth.
He accused these entities of being tools for political manipulation, attempting to stifle dissent and control political narratives. This misuse of power, according to Gachagua, is a threat to democratic principles and transparency.
Gachagua further alleged that his political allies, including Benjamin Gathiru and James Gakuya, are being targeted. He recounted an incident where Gathiru was stopped by around ten vehicles at Kenol, and his phone was confiscated. Similarly, Gakuya’s phone was also seized, suggesting a coordinated effort to intimidate those close to Gachagua.
In response to the recent grilling of three of his aides by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) over alleged involvement in protests, Gachagua accused the DCI of spreading false narratives through the media.
He urged the DCI and other government entities to focus on their official duties and refrain from engaging in political interference.
