Residents of Mapenzi Estate in Tana River County were left in shock after a woman, Esther Soni, found her mother at her boyfriend’s house on an early morning visit on April 12, 2023. The medical school student had left school to pay her boyfriend a surprise visit and was dropped off at his place by a mutual friend. However, she was shocked to find her mother opening the door, wrapped in a scarf.

Soni reportedly asked her mother what she was doing at her boyfriend’s house before bursting into tears. The situation quickly escalated, and the two fought before the boyfriend intervened and calmed them down. Soni’s mother was seen leaving the house a few minutes later, and two women joined Soni and the boyfriend inside the house.

Sources intimated that Soni was overwhelmed during the fight and momentarily collapsed, giving her mother a chance to flee. The student was heard crying from the house, narrating how she had introduced her boyfriend to her mother last year when he visited her ailing father in the hospital.

Neighbors reported hearing Soni screaming and cursing, vowing to kill her mother. They also saw her leaving the house with her shoes in her hand while the other women followed from behind. She boarded a matatu and left town, and her boyfriend is rumored to have left town too.

The incident has left the community shocked and saddened, with some residents noting that the family had recently buried their father in the same month and were yet to overcome the loss. While Soni’s mother, a local teacher, refused to comment on the matter, the incident has sparked discussions on family dynamics and the role of parents in their children’s lives.
