Raila Odinga, the leader of the opposition party Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition, has accused President William Ruto of sneaking out of the country to meet with the Cabinet Secretary for Investments, Trade and Industry, Moses Kuria.
Speaking at a rally in Likoni, Mombasa County, Raila claimed that the President who he claimed was spotted at the middle of the night in Dubai had gone to initiate talks on sourcing foodstuffs from abroad to siphon money. Raila claimed that the government had awarded the tender to import the foodstuffs to a company on the brink of dying so that friends of those in government could get the tenders.
According to Raila, this move would lead to a loss of over Sh.8billion that should have been collected through tax, with no reduction in the prices of foodstuffs as compared to those from Kenyan companies. Raila gave an example with an invoice from Mumias Sugar Company, which he claimed sells sugar at Ksh. 5,300 per bag as compared to Landmark service, which he alleges sells the same bag of sugar at Ksh. 6,400 before it is even transported to Kenya.
Raila further alleged that the meeting between Ruto and Kuria was meant to organize how to select the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) commissioners.
