Kenyan rapper Octopizzo, known for his social activism, recently took to Instagram to express his displeasure with the current situation in the country, particularly the high fuel prices. Octopizzo, who often resides outside Kenya while managing his other businesses, has returned to the country and voiced his concerns directly to President William Ruto.
In his video message, Octopizzo specifically called upon Ruto to address the soaring prices of paraffin, which is still widely used for cooking and lighting in disadvantaged areas like the ghettos. He criticized the silence of Members of Parliament, urging them to take immediate action on this pressing issue.
The rapper emphasized that the increase in petrol and diesel prices was understandable to some extent, but paraffin prices should not be affected in the same manner. He reminded Ruto of his promises to improve the lives of hustlers and suggested that tackling the rising paraffin prices would be a step towards fulfilling that commitment.
Octopizzo highlighted the difficulties faced by people, particularly children who rely on fuel for their lanterns to do their homework. The rapper expressed concern that the current situation made it increasingly challenging for individuals to afford this basic necessity.
Meanwhile, the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) announced the new fuel prices, which came into effect on May 15. The prices of petrol, diesel, and kerosene have all witnessed an increase. In Nairobi, a liter of petrol now costs Sh182.70, diesel costs Sh168.40, and kerosene costs Sh161.13.
The EPRA attributed the price hikes to the rising cost of crude oil in the global market and the depreciation of the Kenyan shilling against the US dollar. The regulator explained that the difference between the landed costs and retail prices includes distribution and storage, profit margins, taxes, and levies.
Octopizzo’s public plea to President Ruto reflects the frustration and concerns of many Kenyans who are grappling with the effects of high fuel prices. As an influential figure, the rapper’s message draws attention to the urgent need for action to alleviate the burden on ordinary citizens, especially those living in disadvantaged areas.
