Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has come out to clarify reports that the Kenyan government is targeting the business empires of Azimio leader Raila Odinga and retired President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Speaking at a church service in Nairobi County, Gachagua noted that their plan was to end the monopoly by allowing more competitors into the market, which would push prices down and benefit local farmers.
Gachagua was referencing an article published in the Sunday Nation that highlighted the government’s plans to open up the market for other players in the LPG industry, which would significantly hurt the dominance of East Africa Spectre Limited, linked to the Raila Odinga family.
The government also banned the importation of powdered milk linked to Uhuru’s Brookside Dairy business, which controls around 40 percent of the market share for processed milk.
Gachagua accused the Uhuru regime of grooming the Azimio leader to continue monopolizing the businesses and allegedly safeguard their interests. He stated that the government’s plan was to open up the sectors and ensure that everyone benefits. By allowing more players into the market, the middlemen would be edged out, and local farmers would benefit.
The move to open up the market for other players in the LPG industry and ban the importation of powdered milk linked to Brookside Dairy has been met with mixed reactions. Some argue that it is a step in the right direction, while others claim that it is a political move aimed at undermining the businesses of Raila Odinga and Uhuru Kenyatta.
