Deputy President William Ruto is expected to camp in the Mt Kenya region to tone down Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga’s influence in the region.

During his visit, Ruto is expected to use new tact to reclaim the support he had lost to Raila who had camped in the region for some time in the past.

Unlike in his previous engagement where he came out abrasive, the DP will appear to be laid down something that will send his competitors to panic.

Ruto is expected to transverse the region from Murang’a to Embu and later on to Meru and Tharaka Niithi counties. In his tour in the counties, he will soften his hard-line position to court regional leaders and target those adamant to join his camp using propaganda and bloggers.

Ruto has also been dissociating with ill associates with Uhuru’s presidency while taking credit for its associates.

A source within the DP’s camp has revealed that they intend to woo all MPs and Senators from the region to their side by January 2022. Ruto is also said to be quietly wooing governors who are leaning towards Raila-Uhuru’s side.

The source also disclosed they plan to send signals that UDA has taken full control of President Uhuru’s political backyard.

The defections serve both sides. The defectors are desperate for political survival while Ruto is out for numbers and the perception that he has an upper hand,” Prof Macharia Munene told a local daily.

Political commentators say the second in command will use all sorts of political tricks to gain power since as for him, the end justices the means.
