The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and its supporters were left in shock after the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) revealed its plans to field a presidential candidate in the 2027 general elections.
This announcement came after long-standing ODM leader Raila Odinga signaled his exit from active politics, leading to speculation that the party would take a backseat or support President William Ruto in the next election.
Addressing the press in Kisumu County, ODM Chairperson and Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga dismissed rumors that the party would not contest for the presidency.
Wanga confirmed that ODM would not only field candidates for all elective positions, from Members of County Assembly (MCAs) to Senators and Governors, but also push for the presidency.
“We are not leaving any seat behind, including the presidency. ODM is moving forward with full strength,” Wanga declared. Her statement indicated that the party was focused on maintaining its presence and power in the political landscape, despite Raila’s retirement.
This bold move came just days after Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi hinted that ODM could back President Ruto in 2027. Wanga’s clarification sent ripples through political circles, particularly within UDA, which had anticipated Raila’s exit might weaken ODM’s resolve for the top seat.
Wanga further expressed confidence in the leadership of Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o, who has been appointed as the interim ODM party leader.
According to Wanga, Nyong’o’s vast experience and long-standing involvement in ODM’s development make him well-suited to guide the party through this transition and into the future elections.
