Political tensions flared during President William Ruto’s recent visit to Nasewa in Busia County, where he inspected the multi-billion-shilling Nasewa EPZA project.
A politically motivated group, led by an individual whose homestead is located just meters from the venue where the President was addressing the gathering, and notorious for its divisive tactics, orchestrated a plot to disrupt Matayos South Ward MCA Dennis Okinda’s speech.
Reports indicate that the group recruited local chang’aa drinkers, offering them Ksh 50 worth of brew each, to heckle the MCA during his address.
The disruption is believed to have stemmed from lingering resentment over Okinda’s perceived outsider status.
Despite his instrumental role in bringing transformative development projects worth billions to Nasewa, in collaboration with the county governor, some factions in the community have opposed his leadership.
This group has been pushing an ill-conceived agenda to front leaders exclusively from the Nasewa sub-location, ignoring the broader benefits Okinda’s leadership has brought to the region.
As Okinda stepped forward to address the gathering, the hired hecklers attempted to create chaos, but their actions quickly backfired. The majority of the crowd, aware of Okinda’s contributions, silenced the agitators and rallied behind the MCA, applauding his development efforts.
Many attendees expressed frustration over the divisive politics, emphasizing that Okinda’s leadership has significantly elevated Nasewa’s profile, particularly through the EPZA project.
Residents at the event condemned the actions of the hecklers and praised Okinda’s achievements, noting that he had facilitated the construction of new roads, ensuring better connectivity for residents and businesses.
Additionally, Okinda has spearheaded the installation of streetlights, ensuring the area is well-lit at night, enhancing security and fostering a vibrant night economy.
Through his efforts, Nasewa residents now enjoy access to clean water, a significant improvement in their quality of life. He has also championed education in the area by providing bursaries to needy students, enabling them to pursue their dreams.
President Ruto’s visit underscored the immense potential of the Nasewa EPZA project, expected to drive economic growth and create jobs for the local population.
