New comers not happily welcomed in UDA

Defectors returning to Deputy President William Ruto’s outfit UDA are receiving a cold reception from the party founders who view newcomers as rivals who have come to destroy the party.

This was evident during the official welcoming of Kirnyaga Governor Anne Waiguru to the party at DP Ruto’s Karen residence. During the occasion, some of the party’s most vocal leaders including Kirinyaga women rep Purity Ngirici was missing.

Ngirici accused Waiguru of seeking sympathy war on corruption as well as refuted claims that she has political dealings with the governor.

“There is nothing new with joining UDA. She might even move from UDA to another party. But facts are stubborn. The is that she lost touch with the people of Kirinyaga and abandoned them, preferring to be absent,” Ngirici said.

At the centre of the rivalry between Ngirici and Waiguru is the party’s nomination ticket as the two will be competing for the Kirinyaga gubernatorial seat under the UDA party.

That is the same scenario Kwale deputy governor Fatuma Achani is facing after she defected to UDA. Her defection has not been well received by Kwale gubernatorial aspirant Lung’anzi, an old member of the UDA party.

There are suggestions that Lung’anzi is unease with the presence of Achani at the party and he is currently thinking of quitting UDA.

“I am putting a lot of effort into self-rebrand. I do not want my candidacy to be associated with any party,” he said as reported by a local daily.

Deputy President is facing the same dilemma in Taita Taveta. During his visit to the county last a few weeks ago he seemed to have favoured former governor John Mwatate, a move that didn’t sit well with Dan Mwanzo and Stephen Mwekesi who were eyeing UDA ticket have now threatened to walk out of the party.

Murang’a senator Irungu Kang’ata admitted that those who don’t have enough support from the electorates feel abandoned by the party. He, however, assured all aspirants vying for the UDA ticket that the party will conduct free and fair elections.
