MPs file petition that prevents Raila from 2022 Presidential race

Members of parliament have filed a petition that prevents Raila from the 2022 presidential race. The petition that proposes an age limit of 70 for presidential candidates has been referred to the parliamentary committee. MP Wajir County Mohammed Sheikh from Wajir County came forward with the petition, seeking to amend the Constitution to bar Kenyans above 70 years from contesting the presidency.

Earlier on this week, the petition came under severe attack when it was relayed to the House. According to some MPs, it is a move to lock out Opposition leader Raila Odinga from the 2022 presidential elections. However, despite the protests, Speaker Mr Muturi directed the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee to consider the petition and file their report in the House.

Leader of Minority John Mbadi spoke in favor of the petitioner, arguing that he should be given time to argue the merits of his proposal. He also gave examples of former presidents Jomo Kenyatta and Mwai Kibaki who vied for the presidency when they were above 70.
