Mariga Runs for Dear Life as His Car is Pelted with Stones, almost Burnt in Kibra

As Kenyans were on still celebrating the victory of Eiud Kipchoge in Vienna, Jubilee candidate in the upcoming Kibra by elections McDonald Mariga was under siege as his convoy came under attack in Kibra, where he had gone to campaign. Mariga’s car was pelted with stones, and in one instance, tyres were set ablaze in the middle of the road, a few metres from a towering billboard with the candidate’s face.

The chaos came a few days after ODM petitioned the electoral commission to open an internal probe into vote-rigging claims, raising the stakes in the Kibra by-election that has escalated the supremacy battle between Deputy President William Ruto and Opposition leader Raila Odinga.

Activist Boniface Mwangi last week ridiculed President Uhuru Kenyatta and DP William Ruto for settling on former Harambee Stars forward McDonald Mariga.

Speaking on Wednesday on the Pointblank show aired on KTN, the controversial activist said that the two leaders have taken Kenyans for fools for endorsing the governing Jubilee candidate.

He claimed that Mariga was an aging footballer who had lied about his age, and encouraged gambling.

“Uhuru Kenyatta na Ruto Wametubeba ujinga sana. They decided to get us an ageing footballer who lied about his age, never voted before, was promoting betting and gambling to come and lie to the people of Kibra. Very disrespectful, ” he said.

President Uhuru endorsed Mariga a few weeks ago triggering a firestorm on social media platforms.

There is a section of Kenyans who have disparaged the soccer star’s candidature in Kibra saying it is reversing the gains made through the handshake.

A number of Jubilee politicians led by former Starehe MP Maina Kamanda have thrown their weight behind the candidature of the ODM’s candidate Imran Okoth.
