Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has shed light on the continued animosity between him and Raila Odinga, even after President William Ruto secured the presidency.
Gachagua’s remarks came during a recent event at State House, where he addressed the public while endorsing Raila’s candidacy for the chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC).
Historically, Gachagua and Raila have had a contentious relationship, marked by heated exchanges and personal barbs.
However, Gachagua revealed that the root of their disputes was not personal but political.
According to Gachagua, the conflicts were primarily driven by Raila’s pursuit of the same position that President Ruto was contesting. This competition, he argued, naturally fueled their public disagreements.
Gachagua’s remarks were delivered with a tone of reconciliation and respect.
“Somebody may ask, why is Rigathi Gachagua, who has had issues with Raila’s leadership, now speaking differently?” he said. “As a truthful man, I had nothing against him; it’s only that we were competing for the same position between him and my boss.”
His comments were met with laughter and applause from the audience.
Despite their past clashes, Gachagua’s endorsemed Raila’s AUC chairmanship bid.
He praised Raila’s qualifications and expressed confidence in his ability to deliver on the continental stage.
“Today, we are unveiling Raila Odinga as a transformative leader, moving from a national figure to an African statesman,” Gachagua stated.
In his address, Gachagua assured Raila of support from all Kenyans, transcending political divides.
“All of us, from the president to every Kenyan, are behind you,” he declared.
