Social media influencer Francis Gaitho has broken his silence following the mistaken arrest of journalist Macharia Gaitho.
The National Police Service (NPS) had earlier today mistakenly apprehended Macharia Gaitho, believing him to be Francis Gaitho, who is currently under investigation.
In a statement on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, Francis Gaitho announced that he will present himself at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Headquarters at Mazingira House on Kiambu Road at 2pm today.
“I will be presenting myself at DCI Headquarters, Mazingira House Kiambu Road at 2pm today. Thank you all for your concern,” he stated.
Gaitho added that he is in touch with his legal counsel on how to proceed, signaling his readiness to cooperate with the authorities while ensuring his rights are protected.
The incident began when the NPS mistakenly arrested veteran journalist Macharia Gaitho, sparking public outcry and demands for clarity.
The NPS quickly issued a statement acknowledging the error and clarifying that the arrest was meant for Francis Gaitho.
“The National Police Service would like to clarify to the public that this morning, we arrested journalist Macharia Gaitho in a case of mistaken identity, meant for the arrest of Francis Gaitho who is our subject of investigation,” the police said.
The confusion stems from a high-profile case involving the Kware dump site murders.
On Monday, Director of Criminal Investigations Amin Mohamed had publicly criticized Francis Gaitho for undermining their investigation.
Francis Gaitho had alleged that the DCI issued a misleading statement and incorrectly identified the prime suspect. His comments quickly went viral, drawing significant attention and sparking a heated debate online.
In response, Amin Mohamed defended the investigation’s integrity and cautioned against spreading misinformation that could impede the investigative process.
