Ford Foundation: The 88-Year-Old NGO Accused of Funding Gen-Z Protests in Kenya

President William Ruto recently accused the Ford Foundation, a prominent American NGO, of financing the anti-government protests led by Gen-Z activists.

Speaking at a rally in Nakuru on July 15, Ruto’s allegations ignited a firestorm of debate surrounding the foundation’s influence in Kenya and the broader implications for civil society.

Founded in 1936 by Edsel Ford and his father, Henry Ford, the Ford Foundation has a long-standing mission to reduce poverty, promote democratic values, and foster international cooperation.

Over its 88-year history, it has become one of the world’s largest philanthropic organizations, distributing approximately $500 million annually in grants.

Its commitment to social justice and human rights has made it a key player in funding initiatives aimed at uplifting marginalized communities worldwide.

However, Ruto’s accusations suggest a growing concern among Kenyan leaders regarding foreign influence in domestic affairs.

He challenged the Ford Foundation to explain its role in funding protests that, according to him, threaten Kenya’s democracy.

“Those who are sponsoring the violence, we know them… Shame on them!” he declared, calling on the organization to either cease its support for the unrest or leave the country.

The protests, largely driven by young activists demanding government accountability and social reforms, have seen participation from various groups, including students and professionals
