Both social and traditional media have been abuzz over the last 72 hours with the astonishing news of how a 19 year old boy, Adam Kamau Macharia, was able to wrestle a 1.2 billion estate from his billionaire media mogul grandfather, SK Macharia. Even as the nation continues to gush over the news, with some calling him the youngest billionaire in the country, details are now emerging on the role that the 19 year old’s grandmother and S.K Macharia’s first wife, Serah Njeri played, and which led to SK loosing the case.
While almost the whole country knows that SK Macharia’s wife is one Purity Gathoni, who workers at Royal Media Services faithfully call ”Mama Purity”, before her the tycoon was married to one Serah Njeri. She was the mother to John Gichia, SK’s son who died in a road accident in 2018.
John died leaving behind a 1.2 billion estate that has been at the center of a court battle between SK and his son’s family.
Serah is Adam’s grandmother, but despite this, had joined the case on SK’s side, seeking to have Adam and his mother prevented from controlling the 1.2 billion estate that was left behind by John Gichia.
However, she withdrew from the application to administer the estate ‘for the sake of family’ unity and because her grandson was now over 18 years.
High Court judge Stella Mutuku revoked letters granted to the media mogul in 2019 to administer the estate of his late son, John Gichia.
Mr Macharia’s grandson, Adam Kamau Macharia, moved to court in May last year seeking to stop his grandfather from administering the Sh1.2 billion estate.
Adam told the court that he was a minor at the time the letters of administration were issued to his grandparents and that he was seeking a piece of his father’s wealth now that he’s an adult.
“The circumstances dictate that this court relooks the issues of representation in this estate afresh and make appropriate orders after hearing the parties. It is also clear to me that as at the time the two grants were issued, the sole beneficiary was a minor,” Justice Mutuku said.
