Wamatangi causes confusion; on his way out of Uhuru’s camp or just a free thinker?

All eyes will be fixed on the Kiambu County Senator Kimani Wamatangi’s next move, and whether he might be the next major politician after Kirinyaga governor Anne Waiguru to bolt out of the Uhuru-allied camp within Jubilee, popularly known as Kieleweke. This follows the senator’s thinly veiled remarks that were hinted against the president though without expressly mentioning him, in a surprising outburst from the usually loyal politician who also happens to be the Senate Chief Whip.

The Kiambu County Senator was speaking while appearing on Citizen TV’s morning show Daybreak which was hosted by Waihiga Mwaura. Others on the show were Machakos County governor Alfred Mutua, Kathiani member of parliament Robert Mbui of the Wiper Democratic Movement party, and city lawyer Danstan Omari.

Wamatangi said that one of the most important and crucial lessons the present leadership could learn from the retired president Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi is the respect for well laid down time limits. Walking down memory lane, he recalled that back in 2002, Moi wielded immense power, and it would have been quite easy for him to disregard the then term limits and continue ruling beyond his second term. However, to the shock and consternation of almost everyone, when his time was up, not only did he agree to walk away, but also didn’t interfere with the subsequent elections in a bid to ensure that he was replaced by his chosen successor.

Coming back to the present time, he said that any possible plans to try and tamper with the set timetable by postponing elections in a bid to extend the present president’s time in office would be ill-advised. He urged the powers that be to practice constitutionalism and make sure everything is done according to the law.

Worth noting is that just last week, the senator was engaged in a public and nasty verbal exchange with his Kiambu County governor Dr. James Nyoro when he appeared before the Senate. Wamatangi accused the governor of presiding over a bleeding county, which he referred to as a casino, that was loosing money left, right and center through lack of proper checks and balances.
