Waititu’s impeachment behind the death of Kahawa Wendani MCA Cyrus Omondi?

Cyrus Omondi

The mysterious death of Kahawa Wendani Wendani MCA Cyrus Omondi coontinue to raise many questions, latest being whether the impeachment of Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu could have played part in his untimely death. It is public knowledge that the Kahawa Wendani MCA seconded Waititu’s impeachment motion at the Kiambu County Assembly. Waititu and Omondi have had a very rocky relationship dating back to 2017, when he won the Kahawa Wendani seat. The person who was once described as an ‘outsider’ by Ferdinand Waititu was beginning to grow political fangs beyond his ward of Kahawa Wendani.

The first public spat between Omondi and Waititu was in 2018 when the then governor (Waititu) clashed with the MCA when he led the demolition of kiosks set up near a public toilet. It was here that Waititu asked Kiambu people not to vote for non-locals in his county.

“That is exactly what happened, and that is how he got the seat, we will never allow it (electing non-Kikuyus) to happen again,” Waititu said.

The relationship between the two leaders grew from bad worse and it was claimed on 8th January 2018, hired goons were sent by Waititu to the home of the Kahawa Wendani MCA Cyrus Omondi with an intention of burning it because of a fight over the Kahawa Wendani stage. Since then, Waititu and Omondi have not been seeing eye to eye. The Kahawa Wendani MCA has been the most prominent face in the Waititu impeachment.

At the time of his death, Cyrus Omondi had completely fallen out with Waititu. Cyro, as he is popularly known defied the odds to become first Luo MCA in Kiambu county, at a time it was deemed to be impossible. In his previous attempts to be the MCA, Omondi would become second because of his party choice, having vied on an ODM ticket in the 2007 and 2013 elections.

He decided to dump ODM ahead of the August 2017 elections after he was convinced by local residents and his group.

“With ODM you cannot make it in this area but I still had numbers,” he said adding how he was discouraged from running in an area dominated by Kikuyus.

“I had to convince a lot of people, especially those inclined to the ODM party, that I had to move,” he said.

The first-time Luo MCA in Kiambu said tribalism was still a stereotype deep in some people, especially elderly persons.
