Veteran Lawyer Predicts A Possibility Of A UhuRuto Re-union

It is very possible that President Uhuru Kenyatta will soon be left with no option but to move back to his embattled deputy William Ruto, some opposition figures now warn.

Uhuru and Ruto are currently the worst of political enemies, with the President even making it clear that he is against the DP succeeding him in next year’s polls.

Makueni MP Dan Maanzo says that the President, just like any other politician, is after his interests, this being why he seems very interested in shaping his succession.

He observes that this is why he has been trying to unite the opposition brigade and should be expected to troop back to Ruto now that his efforts seem to be futile.

“Nothing stops him from changing tact. After all, politics is all about interests and if the president strikes a deal with Ruto to safeguard his interests, then we are doomed. That is why we must agree on one amongst us immediately,” he told The Standard.

Uhuru has twice hosted the five opposition leaders to try and rally them behind Raila, with the remaining four leaders always coming out later to announce that it won’t happen.

They have insisted that they must be in the ballot, which Maanzo, an ally of Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, says will soon cost them and result in their humiliation in the ballot.

A similar opinion is shared by ANC Deputy Party Leader Ayub Savula, who also warns that the disagreement within the opposition team will make them Ruto’s food next year.

“If we continue with such a casual approach to the elections, he will beat us hands down,” the Lugari MP, an ally of ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi, also an opposition leader, said.

The other opposition leader is Ford Kenya boss Moses Wetangula. Himself, Mudavadi, Kalonzo and Gideon Moi of KANU are the chiefs of the One Kenya Alliance (OKA) team.

Raila is seen as Uhuru’s prefered successor, but Maanzo’s prediction means that he might have to deal with another loss in 2022 if the opposition refuses to heed to Uhuru’s unity calls.
