Barely thee years after sweeping to power in a landslide victory buoyed by Raila’s memorable “Kibaki Tosha” clarion call, the former president Mwai Kibaki reneged on his promise of creating a progressive new constitution. Instead, in 2005 he presented Kenyans with a substandard draft constitution which contained much of the vestiges of the old one. An indignant Raila opposed this and formed an outfit known as ODM Kenya which captured the entire country’s imagination and attracted people like William Ruto, Uhuru Kenyatta and Kalonzo on board. They successfully defeated Kibaki’s draft constitution. However, what Raila didn’t know is that there was a rude shock awaiting him; a hidden card by Kalonzo Musyoka. Raila ended up loosing ODM Kenya to Kalonzo. This was months to the election and Raila was finding himself without a party. He quickly had to buy a party called ODM from a gentleman by the names Mugambi Imanyara. Luckily for him, ODM has survived to date and become a strong party. However, latest reports indicate that Musalia might be facing the same predicament Raila faced.
As allegations of division continue to rock the One Kenya Alliance, OKA, reports are now emerging that the outfit was already officially registered a while back, but the certificate of registration is in the hands of former Vice-president, Kalonzo Musyoka. In what is turning out to be an interesting case of dejavu similar to an earlier incident between Kalonzo and Raila, Mudavadi is said to be now shopping for a new party.
The Standard Group reported that following alleged negotiations between Kalonzo Musyoka and Raila Odinga, Musalia has grown uncomfortable with the entire arrangement of OKA. However, he finds himself in a sticky position since the former Vice-president is said to be in possession of the OKA papers. This has caused Mudavadi to consider forming a new coalition outfit known as Kenya Kwanza.
Mudavadi’s camp has refuted these claims, maintaining that they are only interested in securing the OKA name so that spoilers don’t run away with the party.
