A section of allies of President Uhuru Kenyatta from Mt Kenya have said that as things are currently, ODM leader Raila Odinga cannot brag of having the region’s vote.
Raila, who has declared his presidential bid for next year, has been very keen on the vote and has been frequenting the region, winning a handful of allies as a result.
While some have been claiming that Raila already has the vote due to his closeness to President Uhuru Kenyatta, some now say that a lot will have to be done to hand it to him.
They include Murang’a Woman Representative Sabina Chege, who says that it can only happen with a good strategy, indirectly admitting that Central is not with Odinga.
“With a good political strategy, nothing is impossible in politics,” the leader is quoted by The Standard newspaper.
Laikipia governor Nderitu Muriithi too admitted that it will be hard, but blamed area leaders for lying to locals about Raila.
“If you keep saying someone is a bad person for over 20 years, many will believe it and it may be a bit hard to undo the lies and to replace with the truth. But we were in competition with him and we had to tell our people how bad he was for us to win,” he said.
On Sunday, SK Macharia, the Royal Media boss and close Raila supporter, admitted that if elections were to be held today, Deputy President William Ruto, Raila’s leading rival, would sweep the region clean.
Earlier, Kirinyaga governor Anne Waiguru made a U-turn on Raila after claiming that 40 percent of Mt Kenya is with him even without campaigning.
She endorsed Raila while accompanying him to Nakuru and would days later, in Laikipia county, say that Mt Kenya hasn’t settled on any candidate as it’s prefered next President.
